The wisdom teeth are the last 4 teeth that come out in the right and left most posterior part of the lower and upper jaw. They usually erupt between the ages of 17 - 25. Ideally, these teeth develop without complications, but in reality most people have at least one impacted wisdom tooth. Even if these teeth come out of the gum without any problems, they may compress other teeth or grow at an inappropriate angle, which may cause undesirable conditions in the future. For this reason, many people prefer to have their teeth extracted in order to avoid infection, tooth compression and other complications.
The wisdom teeth may need to be removed even if they have not yet caused any problems. Since wisdom teeth are at the very back of the mouth, brushing and flossing is difficult. Even if the complications of these teeth do not occur at a young age, they can cause problems in adults over the middle age.
Conditions Requiring Extraction of Wisdom Teeth
-
If you have one or more impacted wisdom teeth,
-
If you feel compression or damage to the adjacent teeth because of your wisdom teeth.
-
If you have difficulty cleaning your wisdom teeth sufficiently,
-
If there are signs of decay or gum disease.
-
Through an examination and an x-ray, you can find out whether you have impacted wisdom teeth.
Wisdom Tooth Extraction Process
You will decide with your dentist whether local anaesthesia or sedation will be performed according to the difficulty of the extraction process and your general attitude towards dental treatment. You will not feel any pain during the operation. Once the teeth have been removed, the gums will be sutured and the wound will be closed. If the tooth extraction is performed with sedation, you may need a driver to take you home as you will not be able to drive after the operation.
After Wisdom Tooth Extraction
During the first few weeks after extraction, you must keep the extraction site clean. You should also use the medications prescribed by your dentist. Do not use a straw for the first few days after surgery. If you experience a fever or discomfort worsening a few days after the extraction, tell your doctor.
